Week 7 - Large format - Church

This week we actually shot some roll film in the large formats but because we were shooting roll film me and Charni forgot about the crop factor oppps........ it will interesting to see the processed film.

This was our task

  1. A fully corrected view of the facade of the building using a 4x5 camera
  2. One shot along the side of the building demonstrating the Schiemfplug principle using a 4x5 camera
  3. A fully corrected view of the facade of the building using a digital SLR
  4. One shot along the side of the building demonstrating the Schiemfplug principle using a digital SLR
  5. Two detail shots using a digital SLR
Here are my photos in order

This one i had to straighten the verticals in photoshop even though i used the tilt shift i was getting to much softness in the edges when it was fully straight.

This one was the Schiemfplug. I found that it didnt not actually work like the large formats did as you cannot tilt the front. All that happend was it straightened the image.

Then my tow detail shots that i did HDR.

The door was straightened with the tilt shift and the other one in photoshop.

Environmental Portrait

Sienna Perry
Environmental Portrait - Natural light

This shot i think could be improved a little bit maybe a bit more depth of field but this was one of the first test shots and shooting kids is the hardest thing to do EVER!!!

I believe it is good in the way that it tells the story of this little girl, of course she has lots of stuff that is all pink this gives you the impression that she is a bit spoilt. I found this little fairly princess outfit when i was rearranging the room which i thought works well as she is definatly mummies little princess also portraying she is a bit spoilt. Although in the next photo i have put her in a dora shirt to emphasise her love for Dora even more, but i think both work. She also has a very cheeky expression, this defiantly portrays her personality. She also has alot of dora the explorer thing which portrays her love for Dora.

This one also works well and the lighting, depth of field and composition is better but the photo doesn't tell the story as well as the last photo does. It is very cute and i love the catch light in the eyes but there is not enough Dora the explorer around all you can see is the bag and her shirt. Also there is not enough emphasise on the amount of things she has. You can tell she is very messy which is something the other photo didn't quiet do every well.

Overall it was a good hard shoot and im not sure which one to choose for my final.

Architecture folio

This is the first Shot from my architecture folio

Large formats and environmental portraits

This week we had another play with the large format cameras and had a look at using roll film in the large formats. It was fairly simple rolling on the film, it is the same as medium format but just a bit bigger.

We also had a look at environmental portraits and they can be done. This helped me alot with thinking about my portraits. After this i have now decided to completely throw out all my portraits and start again. The sheet cameron gave us is very helpful towards my portraits, he also gave us a sheet that showed us how to properly convert to black and white which also helped alot for me.

I cannot at this moment find anything on Armond Newman i will keep tring but nothing so far

Reshoots

Mitch Rodgers - DJ MER - DJ / Producer
Flash Portrait

This shot i went back with the 580 flashguns and shot this tring to recreate the exact same shot by even taking the previous photo with me to go off and correct my mistakes. This time i didnt panorama to fit more into the photo. So now the image is tighter in but still works, I also changed the lighting a bit to fill the shadow on the nose. It was very hard to keep the depth of field using flash but i bounce the flashes and diffused them with sheets. USing flash left a harsher light on his face.

Sam De Smeth - Mountainbike Rider
Natural light portrait

This i was not able to shot in the same spot as the last shot, but this one is shot at his local downhill track in the pines ( pine forest in the background ). I had and assistant reflecting the light using a car reflector which worked great to fill in the shadows. We had to shot this during the middle of the day which made it hard to get the light right from background.

1st Shoots

These shots were rejected and i had to reshoot.

Flash Portrait
Mitch Rodgers - DJ MER - DJ / Producer

This shot was rejected for the shadow on the face and i shot this with tungsten.
This shot was done stitching 3 images into a panorama.

Natural light Portriat
Sam De Smeth - Mountianbike Rider

This shot was rejected because of the black tree in the background being much to distracting and the face not being lit up properly.

I set out to recreate these shots without these issues

Week 4

This week we worked on large formats again and the scheimpflug focusing. We were also showed how to the film fits in the back of the large format slides using the 120mm medium format film.
We also discussed how we are to going to shoot with the large formats to learnt how to using the focusing better for sue in the studio.
We decided we are going to try use the 120mm film in the large formats for try get some Polaroid film for them from CIT.
I am exited to start shooting with the large format cameras because i like to shot film and this is very much the ultimate of film photography.
We also tested the lens distortion correction in photoshop, we went out and took some photos then came back and tried to correct them in photoshop here is my attempt.

Unedited

EDITED
As i corrected some things others seemed to get worse.
Defiantly need me practise at lens correction

Week 3

Review

This week we were introduced to the large format cameras, we set out into small groups and tried to figure out the cameras for ourselves. I think the large format cameras are going to be very hard to use but i look forward to using them with the digital backs. I still have not really experienced the tilting focus enough to really know how it works but with more experience i think it will be fun.

Question

Give one reason why you would use film to take a particular shot.

The only real reason to shot with film now is for the quality as medium and large formats are still the highest quality. Now with digital is getting better and closer but still isn't as good as film.
